About Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty is a 1959 American animated feature produced by Walt Disney and released to theatres on January 29, 1959 by Buena Vista Distribution. The sixteenth animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series, it was the last fairy tale produced by Walt Disney (after his death, the studio returned to the genre with 1989's The Little Mermaid).

The story

In a faraway kingdom, the king and queen had desired a child of their very own for a long time and when their wish finally came true, they announced a grand celebration at the palace. All of the fairies from the kingdom were invited and immediately named as godmothers for their new child, whose name was Felicity, which means "happiness". Each of the fairies blessed the newborn baby girl with a special gift that neither gold nor riches could buy: beauty, intelligence and grace among others. Just as Primrose, the last of the fairies, was about to give the child her gift, Odelia, an evil fairy everyone had long thought dead appears to give her gift to the child, the gift of death; one week after Felicity's sixteenth birthday, she is to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and fall dead. Saddened and frightened by Odelia's curse, the king and queen beg of Primrose to save their child with her gift. Primrose, who doubts her magic could defeat Odelia's, decides that if she cannot remove the curse, she will be able to change it, and therefore declares that Felicity will indeed prick her finger on a spindle, but she will not die, instead she'll fall into a sleep of one hundred years and a day, when she'll be awakened by a kiss of true love and Odelia will be the one to die instead…
